Abortion Services

General Information
Summit Women's Center offers abortion services by appointment up to 18 weeks from the last menstrual period (LMP). Abortions are performed under local anesthesia (first trimester only), twilight, or general anesthesia by state licensed, Board Certified or eligible OB-GYN physicians.

Medical Abortion

4 - 7 weeks

Non-surgical abortion (abortion by pill) is available up to 7 weeks (49 days) gestation. This process requires several visits to the clinic. Two medications are used -- Mifeprex (RU486) and Misoprostol. Counseling is a very important part of the medical abortion process. Medical abortion allows the patient to complete the abortion in the privacy and comfort of her home.

Surgical Abortion

Between 7-12 Weeks LMP (first trimester)

Abortions can be done under local anesthesia (a numbing of the cervix), under twilight (a strong sedative), or general anesthesia (with the patient completely asleep during the procedure.) The average stay in the clinic is approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Between 12+ to 18 weeks LMP (second trimester)

Women may select twilight or general anesthesia for the procedure. The average stay in the clinic is 4 to 6 hours.

All abortions are performed by state licensed Board Certified or eligible OB-GYN physicians. Services made available through our clinic include laboratory work, counseling, exam by the doctor, recovery room care, and a follow-up exams. The follow up exams given at 2 to 3 weeks following the procedure are free. Follow up exams given 4 weeks or later will incur a $15 fee.

Payment can be made with cash, money order, MasterCard or Visa. No personal checks. Summit accepts Medicaid (Title 19) and some City welfare. Summit also participates in some commercial insurance and HMOs. Women participating in these plans must have prior approval. Some insurance companies do not cover additional charges for twilight or general anesthesia.
